At RHLS, we are deeply involved in activities at the local, state, and national level. Below is a list of some of the recent and upcoming events that we are initiating or participating in:

Discussion on Related and Subsidiary Organizations

RHLS Staff Attorney and Independence Foundation Fellow, William Shuey, will be participating in a free discussion on the issues that non-profits face when operating more than one legal entity.  The event is free and will be held on January 5th at 2pm in the Seminar Room at the Fels Institute of Government, University of Pennsylvania, 3814 Walnut Street.

PULP Partners with the PUC, MidPenn Legal Services, and Widener Law School to Launch Pilot Program to Provide Legal Help for Low-Income Consumers in Utility Complaint Process

The Pennsylvania Civil Law Clinic at the Widener Law School Harrisburg campus announced a pilot program to provide free legal assistance to consumers who reside in Dauphin County and meet certain income requirements. The Pennsylvania Utility Law Project is a partner in this project.

 

Web Conference -- Reclaiming Abandoned Pennsylvania: Conservatorship for Abandoned Properties

RHLS is cosponsoring an educational web conference on the new Conservatorship Act on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at noon. The Conservatorship Act is a far reaching tool enacted for revitalizing blighted and abandoned property. To learn more and register, visit the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania.

Judy Berkman Testifies Regarding Need to Modernize Pennsylvania's Adverse Possession Law

On September 30, 2009, Judy Berkman presented testimony to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives about the need to modernize Pennsylvania's adverse possessions law. Ms. Berkman testified that changing the law would help preserve single family homes vulnerable to abandonment.

 

Mark Schwartz Presents at 2009 I'M HOME RETREAT

Mark Schwartz presented on September 10, 2009 at the I'M HOME Retreat as part of a panel entitled, "Developing &/or Navigating HFA Financing Programs for Manufactured Housing". Regional Housing Legal Services is one of CFED's local partners and is working to develop and promote financial products and public policy strategies to support resident purchase of manufactured housing communities in Pennsylvania.

35th Anniversary

On May 7, 2009, RHLS celebrated 35th years of providing free legal assistance to nonprofit organizations in Pennsylvania. The event brought together more than 200 people committed to affordable housing, economic development, and sustainable communities. Thank you again to all of our amazing sponsors!

In addition to celebrating work that has enabled our clients to leverage hundreds of millions of dollars to preserve and develop tens of thousands of affordable housing units, we also honored a number of individuals who have served as vital partners and advocates for affordable, sustainable housing in Pennsylvania.

Received the Ernestine Watlington award. Ernestine Watlington was a strong voice, both locally and nationally, for the empowerment and revitalization of distressed communities. RHLS gives this award to Brian Hudson in recognition of his efforts to foster the ideals advocated by Ernestine.
